Response to Hurricane Ida

Read newsletter as a PDF here

Dear neighbor,

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy after a tumultuous week.

As you know, Hurricane Ida reached our district this week, flooding streets, homes and public throughways. The storm tragically took the lives of Westchester and Bronx residents, and is leaving behind severe damage.  I have spent the past couple of days in the district speaking to constituents and assessing needs from damaged homes. The damage is severe as shown in the picture to the right. My office is working with local officials and federal partners to address needs as we assess them.

In Mamaroneck, I joined the Red Cross at the shelter set up at Mamaroneck High School (pictured left). This morning, I joined Governor Hochul in Yonkers to provide recovery updates (pictured below). Thank you to the Red Cross and all the first responders across the district who are helping our neighbors get through this difficult time. Many brave people put their lives on the line rescuing people from dire situations in the midst of a terrible storm.  Their service is deeply appreciated.

Our district needs federal aid to help recover from this crisis. That’s why yesterday I led the New York Congressional Delegation in writing a bipartisan and bicameral letter to President Biden to approve Governor Kathy Hochul’s request for an Emergency Declaration in New York. President Biden subsequently approved the Governor’s request, which will allow federal resources to apply to New York and in our district. I also joined Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand in a letter to the US Army Corps of Engineers and this morning (pictured below) urging that the Army Corps resume work on the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake River Flood Management Project, which is even more urgent given the severe flooding brought on by Ida. These federal actions are essential for both immediate recovery efforts across our district and ensuring we invest in the necessary infrastructure to stem future flooding. Today I am also joining with Rep. Grace Meng in calling on President Joe Biden to support Governor Hochul’s request for a major disaster declaration, which would bring more federal resources for individuals to our district.

Now that an Emergency Declaration has been issued for New York,  New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and FEMA will conduct damage assessments throughout our communities over the coming days to help the state determine next steps for relief. Our office is coordinating with Governor Hochul, NYS DHSES, President Biden, and FEMA to expedite this process and advocate for the resources and support that are badly needed. Please find a list of resources below, please also find links to resources and information based on where you live in the district.
